Rosemary and bay have been growing around the Mediterranean basin for thousands of years — in temple gardens, kitchen courtyards, and the hands of healers long before they found their way into our cooking. We will explore not only their mythic and herbal properties but what they offer in the dye bath.

In this intimate 3-hour class, we'll work with both plants from the ground up — exploring the color they yield, how tannin bases shift and deepen those results, and how modifiers can move a single dye bath into an entirely different spectrum of color. You'll leave with a working understanding of how to build nuanced, layered color from two plants most of us already have on our windowsill, garden and grocery store. 

What we'll explore:

• Rosemary as a dye plant — its history as a plant for memory and the soft sage greens and warm khakis it offers, and how it behaves on different fibers
• Bay laurel — sacred to Apollo, woven into crowns for poets and emperors — and the quiet, complex tones it yields in the bath
• Two tannin bases (oak gall and sumac) and how each one changes the foundation your color builds on
• Modifiers — iron, acid, alkali — and how small shifts in pH or mordant can transform the same plant into an entirely different palette
• How to take dye notes so your results are repeatable and your palette grows intentionally over time
